Keeping a life list here would be impractical! I
will keep up a few and roll them off as I add new ones. If you have read a
good book, seen a good movie or heard a new CD lately, use the
feedback form and tell me about it! I am always
looking for new authors and books!
Books -
Non Fiction
- Deadwood: Stories of the Black Hills - David Milch
David Milch has crafted a series of essays and interviews about
the characters in the fantastic HBO Series. He is a thoughtful
writer and his interviews with the cast are as interesting as his
own observations on human nature.
- The Perfect Vehicle: What is it about Motorcycles -
Melissa Holbrook Pierson
If asked to elaborate on my passion for riding motorcycles I would
point to this book as the finest explanation. And you don't
have to love motorcycles to appreciate this book.
- Into Thin Air - Jon Krakauer
Anything by Krakauer is worth reading. This personal account
of an assault on Mt Everest is a case study on how small things that
go wrong cascade into events that take lives.
- Under The Banner of Heaven - Jon Krakauer
Even if you could care less about the Mormon Religion, (I certainly
had no interest!), this book astonished me at mans willingness to
believe and accept the silliest nonsense and to carry their belief
in a package protected by the worst violence.
- Annals of the Former World - John McPhee
A fascinating look at Geology by the author of a fine book about
Alaska, "Coming Into The Country".
- Seabiscuit: An American Legend - Laura Hillenbrand
Even if you saw the movie, this book is worth the read. A lot
more stuff about the life of a Jockey and the final race will have
your heart pounding.
- Truman: A Biography -
David G. McCullough
I didn't know anything about Truman before reading this biography.
He was a classic underdog who ended up as one of the greats.
McCullough is a clear and compelling writer and this book is among
his best.
- Marley and Me - John Grogan
Not one of my all time favorites, but a good read if you love
dogs...especially Labs. It will either have you saying, "Thank
goodness my _______, isn't that bad" or "Wow, I thought I was the
only one to love a dog that was possessed!"
Fiction
- Golf in the Kingdom - Michael Murphy
I just re-read this wonderful little book. To say this book is
about 'golf' is a bit like saying that 'painting' is about putting color
to canvas. If are a fan of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle
Repair then you will be a fan of this book too!
- The Fourth Hand - John Irving
If you are a fan of Irving's offbeat novels you will enjoy this.
If you liked Widow for a year you may not enjoy his return to
strangeness.
- The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay - Michael
Chabon
Comic Books, Escape Artists and refugees from Nazi Germany.
I found this to be an engaging novel absolutely worth reading!
- Lila: An Inquiry into Morals - Robert M. Pirsig
Yeah...the same guy that wrote Zen and The Art of Motorcycle
Maintenance. I loved the way he draws you on to his quest for a
"System of Quality" and explores the fringes of sanity.
- Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
- Gregory Maguire, Douglas Smith (Illustrator) The Wizard
of Oz from another perspective. Crafty, engaging and a fun read!
- Black Cherry Blues - James Lee Burke
Burke's 'David Robichoux' novels of an alcoholic Cajun Detective are
soulful and well crafted stories taking place in and around New
Orleans. I read all of them. This is a good place to
start!
- Florida Roadkill - Tim Dorsey
A funny, funny read. And this is just the first in a series
featuring a hysterical cast and improbable situations wrapped around
the occasional odd historical fact!
- Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell - Susanna Clarke
Two magicians re-discover 'English' magic and apply their trade to
help England. Very clever and engaging read!
Movies -
- The Departed (2006) - On my top 10 list for sure. The
cast looks like a 'Who's Who' of contemporary actors. This
gripping 'gangster' flick filmed in Boston has it all. Plot
twists, violence, and lots of laugh out loud moments. A must
see....
- Running With Scissors (2006) - I should probably have
this on my book list too...great read! All the performances
are notable in this odd memoir of a young man trying to grow up in
the most dysfunctional of environments. Annette Bening's portrait of
an ambitious, drug addled mother, is absolutely perfect. You
gotta see this movie!
- The Princess Bride (1987)-A funny and clever 'cracked
fairy tale' with cameo appearances by Bill Crystal and Carole Kane.
One of those movies you can watch with the kids and leave them
mystified as to why you are laughing!
- Talk To Her (2002) - I loved this compelling story about
two men who become friends based on a shared love of women who are
in comas -- although their individual circumstances are completely
different. Wonderful soundtrack too!
- Fandango (1985) - Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson
star in this 'Road Trip' movie about college friends last hurrah
before they all head their own way. Available now in DVD!
Music -
- Used Songs -(2001) - Tom Waits
"Tom Traubert's Blues", also called "Waltzing Matilda" is
perfect for Toms gravelly voice. He also sings 'Jersey Girl'
which he wrote for The Boss. Every track has something worth
listening for...
- RAM - (1999) - Paul and Linda McCartney
Admiral Halsey was 'our song'...don't ask me why! I still
love this album with it's eclectic songs and catch music.
- Talk To Her (Soundtrack 2002) -
"Cucurrucucú Paloma," performed by Tropicalia legend Caetano
Veloso is stylized, heart-rending, and intimate and my favorite
among many on this CD. Another highlight is the lovely
flamenco-style track "Raquel," from Cape Verdean string player Bau (Rufino
Almeida)
